He sends these photos along from his final project, and this is what he has to say about making the cymatics images:

“The project was mainly about discovering how to create my own cymatic set-up and then choosing an effective way to capture the patterns that came from it. From extensive research and being more observant during day to day life, this project is being to lead me to believe that light is just an exstention from sound. Therefore we are really looking at sound, and potentially all we see is an immense/dense amount of cymatics. The framerate of humans and the amount of sound we are able to hear and interpret restricts us from being able to notice the make-up of the world around us.” – Stuart Davidson

Please enjoy these cymatics images, and remember they are the proprietary work of an artist, so please don’t “steal” them. If you would like to request permission to use one on your site you may contact the artist.

It’s all part of a larger exhibition in the Art and Nature center at the museum called Ripple Effect, The Art Of H2O and will include “water springing into lifelike flowing form, as standing waves are generated by audible sound to create visual analogues of patterns found throughout nature, from single-celled sea creatures to cyclones, sunflowers to star formations.”

Jeff Volk is the publisher of the two foremost books on cymatics in the world, “Cymatics” by Hans Jenny and “Water Sound Images” by Alexander Lauterwasser, and this presentation promises to be a fascinating and eye opening experience.

There will also be a live cymatics demonstration given by Reid Drum, sculptor and foundry director at Massachussetts College of Art, that will include 3-D wave patterns projected from his “sonic gondola.”

Both events will be free (included in the price of Admission to the Museum) and a great way to introduce children and adults alike to the concept of cymatics.

Reservations are strongly suggested (by April 19th at the latest). Inquire about reservations and read more about the event on the Museum Website, or call their reservations line at 978-745-9500 ext. 3011

Event Date: Sunday, April 22nd, 3 – 4 pm
Location: Morse Auditorium, Peabody Essex Museum
Address: East India Square, 161 Essex Street, Salem, MA 01970
Fee: Included With Museum Admission
Reservations For Cymatics Presentation: 978-745-9500 ext. 3011

The proposal I submitted to Kickstarter for the creation of a cymatics app for the iPhone and iPad has been accepted, so now it’s just a matter of getting the project completed and up at Kickstarter for funding!

So, that’s what I’ll be working on in the next few days…

Here’s where YOU come in:

I am in the process of laying out what kinds of “perks and prizes” will be available for all levels of cymatics app supporters (Kickstarter has a system of pledges and rewards, so everyone who donates to a project gets something in return).

What I need to know now is, what types of cymatics rewards would YOU be most interested in if you end up donating to the cymatics app project?

Some of the things I’ve thought would be of interest are the cymatics app itself, cymatics DVDs, a copy of the book “Cymatics” by Hans Jenny, and maybe some prints of my own cymatics work…but what do you think?

What would you find most exciting to own from the world of cymatics?

Let me know in a comment below and I’ll consider adding it to my list of rewards for the Kickstarter project…

Thanks in advance for your input!
- Jodina

P.S. And a big, big THANK YOU to everyone who submitted their ideas for the cymatics app in my previous post! You had some terrific ideas I hadn’t thought of, and I will definitely be including many of them in the app when it gets built.

P.P.S. Know of anyone else who would be interested in the cymatics iPhone app project? You can help spread the word and make the project a success right here and now – hit the Like, Google+ and Tweet buttons you see just below this post. Thanks!

Soon you will be able to…

I have had many, many requests here at the Journal and at the School of Cymatics for a cymatics iPhone app (or some way of creating cymatics digitally) but none exist to recommend. So…

I am creating the first ever cymatics iPhone app! But it’s still in the development stage, so I’m open to YOUR ideas…

What do you think should be included to make the perfect cymatics iPhone app?

Tell me your ideas here by leaving a comment in the box below, and I will include all the best ones in the iPhone app – and you’ll be the first to know when it’s available! (Be sure to become a member on this site if you want to be notified when it’s ready and you’ll get an email).

Here’s what I am planning on including so far:

1. You’ll be able to use your voice or other music to create cymatic designs
2. A resource section of relevant information about cymatics
3. A DIY section of instructions for non-digital cymatics devices

What do you think? Anything else I should add? Let me know in the comments below…

Thanks in advance for your input!

- Jodina

P.S. I am applying for help with funding through Kickstarter – you won’t be able to see my project there yet, but I’ll let you know when you can. In the meantime if you want to check out a very cool site for crowdfunding artistic projects of all kinds, take a look at Kickstarter here. And don’t forget to put your name and email in the upper right hand corner of this site if you want to be notified when the cymatics iPhone app is available!

“Can cymatics be used for positive health benefits?”
Absolutely. The study of sound waves and how it affects matter has been connected to the medical and alternative medicine fields for at least as long as the term “cymatics” has existed (actually longer).

There have been many studies conducted as well as thriving practices today all around the health benefits of sound as applied to physical matter. Cymatics as an art form is a more recent development, but both practices have something in common as cymatics in art as well as healing involves using and recording sound waves as applied to something physical, whether that is a pile of sand or a collection of human cells.

There are several websites out there where you can learn about cymatics and sound healing, here are three of the best:

The International Sound Therapy Association, founder Mandara Cromwell.

Healing Sounds, founder by Jonathan Goldman

Biosonics was created by John Beaulieu

I met Mandara Cromwell and John Beaulieu personally at the Cymatics Conference in Atlanta and look forward to meeting Johnathan Goldman someday as he is one of the earliest serious researchers into sound healing alive today.

All three of these sites will give you a wealth of information on healing and sound, as well as resources for classes, books and healing tools if you are interested in pursuing this field further.

If it’s music and it’s related to cymatics in some way, we want to hear about it!

I am currently helping to create a “cymatics channel” so that people interested in cymatics and music can go find everything out there all in one place, browse through it and find what they like.

Here’s what to do:

Submit any tips or links to websites, bands, tracks, or musical cymatics projects to me here in the comments section below.

If you would like to submit audio files or videos, you can do so at the School of Cymatics

You can also become a member of the School of Cymatics and create your own page for sharing cymatics projects and passions – if you haven’t done so yet, please do! We have over 200 members at the school so far and would love to have you join us.

Thank you, and I can’t wait to see (and hear) your ideas for adding to a “cymatics music channel”!

P.S. The photo above is of myself playing a handheld cymatic plate. If you would like to learn how to build a similar cymatic plate to play, you can get full instructions here.

If you would like to begin building your own cymatics device using electronics rather than a simple acoustic version, (such as the tonascope or plate and bow) the first thing you will need is a wave driver.

I was able to find this one, which I used in my project for Cirque Du Soliel, at Pasco Scientific.

It has an “arm” which you can place any type of plate on as long as it has a hole drilled in the exact center. I tried a glass plate, a thick steel plate and a thin round steel plate (which is what I ended up using for my cymatics project).

Here is the link to the page featuring this wave driver at Pasco

If you are thinking of using this wave driver to create a cymatics device write in on the comments here and I can provide more detailed information.

The wave driver is one component of the electronic cymatics setup I use to create visual patterns from pure frequencies and music pieces such as you can see in this video.
