Cymatics On Steel by Jodina Meehan

The proposal I submitted to Kickstarter for the creation of a cymatics app for the iPhone and iPad has been accepted, so now it’s just a matter of getting the project completed and up at Kickstarter for funding!

So, that’s what I’ll be working on in the next few days…

Here’s where YOU come in:

I am in the process of laying out what kinds of “perks and prizes” will be available for all levels of cymatics app supporters (Kickstarter has a system of pledges and rewards, so everyone who donates to a project gets something in return).

What I need to know now is, what types of cymatics rewards would YOU be most interested in if you end up donating to the cymatics app project?

Some of the things I’ve thought would be of interest are the cymatics app itself, cymatics DVDs, a copy of the book “Cymatics” by Hans Jenny, and maybe some prints of my own cymatics work…but what do you think?

What would you find most exciting to own from the world of cymatics?

I have had many, many requests here at the Journal and at the School of Cymatics for a cymatics iPhone app (or some way of creating cymatics digitally) but none exist to recommend. So…

I am creating the first ever cymatics iPhone app! But it’s still in the development stage, so I’m open to YOUR ideas…

Jeff Volk is the publisher of the “bible” on Cymatics, “CYMATICS” by Dr. Hans Jenny, and has been involved in Cymatics for over 25 years. He’s produced a series of videos based on the pioneering experiments of Swiss scientist Jenny. His most recent publication, Water Sound Images, showcases the stunning cymatic artistry of the contemporary German photographer and researcher, Alexander Lauterwasser.

These presentations promise to be an exciting and rare look into the world of cymatics with one of the world’s only authorities on the subject, so if you can make it to one of these events I highly recommend you reserve a ticket today.

“Can cymatics be used for positive health benefits?”

Absolutely. The study of sound waves and how it affects matter has been connected to the medical and alternative medicine fields for at least as long as the term “cymatics” has existed (actually longer).

There have been many studies conducted as well as thriving practices today all around the health benefits of sound as applied to physical matter. Cymatics as an art form is a more recent development, but both practices have something in common as cymatics in art as well as healing involves using and recording sound waves as applied to something physical, whether that is a pile of sand or a collection of human cells.

There are several websites out there where you can learn about cymatics and sound healing, here are three of the best:

I met Mandara Cromwell and John Beaulieu personally at the Cymatics Conference in Atlanta and look forward to meeting Johnathan Goldman someday as he is one of the earliest serious researchers into sound healing alive today.

All three of these sites will give you a wealth of information on healing and sound, as well as resources for classes, books and healing tools if you are interested in pursuing this field further.

This is an excellent video made by Suzanne Tribe, a student over at the School of Cymatics.

She built a homemade tonascope using PVC (like in these diy cymatics instructions), then invited a friend to sing Mozart’s “Una Donna a Quindici Anni” through the pipe. Watch this video to see how they achieved some beautiful and complex cymatics images using a very simple setup.

If you would like to begin building your own cymatics device using electronics rather than a simple acoustic version, (such as the tonascope or plate and bow) the first thing you will need is a wave driver.

I was able to find this one, which I used in my project for Cirque Du Soliel, at Pasco Scientific.

It has an “arm” which you can place any type of plate on as long as it has a hole drilled in the exact center. I tried a glass plate, a thick steel plate and a thin round steel plate (which is what I ended up using for my cymatics project).

The wave driver is one component of the electronic cymatics setup I use to create visual patterns from pure frequencies and music pieces such as you can see in this video.

This is a cymatics video test I did for my last project, I was using a wave driver, small amp and an iphone app called the Oscillator 1.1.1 to create these cymatics images.

There are a few iphone apps that you can use to create frequency tones, but this one has produced the best results for me so far using this setup. The only problem is when someone calls me in the middle of doing a cymatics video!

Cymatics now has a place in a Cirque Du Soleil show!

Over the past few months I have been working on a cymatics commission for Cirque Du Soleil, a film clip of cymatics footage to be used in the new show “TOTEM.”

The finished cymatics piece has been approved and is now in TOTEM, which is currently playing in the Netherlands. It will be coming back to the United States this spring.

I worked with Pedro Pires, the “image content designer” for the show. It was an honor to work with Pedro who has won an Emmy for outstanding visual effects and was artistic director of visual effects for the film The Red Violin. You can hear him talking about creating images for TOTEM in the video clip above.

The cymatics images I created for Cirque Du Soleil involved a circular cymatics plate with salt, vibrated by a wave driver. The images needed to have sufficient resolution to be projected about 20 feet in width, down into the ring and over the performers in the show.

It is exciting to know that cymatics is now featured in an international Cirque Du Soleil show, to be seen by thousands of people around the world over the next few years.

Today I will be shipping out the first cymatics plate I have ever made for someone other than myself. I have a feeling it may not be the last plate I will ever make for someone else; once it was finished, I was really happy with how it turned out, and I have a feeling that others may be interested in having a cymatics plate made for them as well.

I just need to figure out how I can make them in a way that’s a little less time consuming. I will work on it, but in the meantime, if you are interested in owning your own cymatic plate but don’t have the means to make one, why don’t you let me know in the comments section below…

This will help me merely in gaging how many people would currently be interested in owning a cymatics plate who can’t make one (for whatever reason). The plate that I created includes the “handheld” plate you see in the photo, as well as a violin bow, some rosin, an allen wrench, some salt, and a set of directions for how to play it. In other words, everything you need to get started playing a cymatics plate straight out of the box.
