Sound healing is closely tied to cymatics, and in fact I met several M.D. practitioners of sound healing at the Cymatics Conference in Atlanta.

Sound healing practitioners use cymatics, not necessarily in the sense that they are making sound visible (as with cymatics and art), but in that they apply sound to matter in order to shape and change it. For example a sound healing practitioner might use sound applied to the human body, and in recent years there has been an emphasis on scientifically record and report on the results achieved using cymatics for sound healing.

These sound healing practitioners range from doctors to chiropractors to yoga teachers, who state that using cymatics for sound healing often generates results that no other therapy could achieve. Some use highly researched frequencies stored and generated on a machine with specific frequencies recommended for specific diagnoses; others use their own voice and a more intuitive approach to sound healing.

If you are interested in learning more about cymatics and sound healing, here are three good places to start. I met all three of the following practitioners in person at the Cymatics Conference in 2008 and they are great resources for sound healing information:

John Beaulieu is the author of “Music and Sound in the Healing Arts” and uses tuning forks among other techniques for sound healing. Dr. Beaulieu also has a “BioSonics sound school” where you can learn about sound healing yourself. Watch my video interview with Dr. Beaulieu here.

Dr. June Leslie Wieder, Doctor of Chiropractic and author of “Sound of the Spine,” focuses on the “resonance of the spine” and applying specific vibrational frequencies directly to the vertebrae. Watch my video interview with Dr. Wieder here.

Mandara Cromwell is President of Cymatherapy® International, and Director of the Board of the International Sound Therapy Association (ISTA), and director of the International Conference on Cymatics. Her focus is the use of a machine called the Cyma®1000, which generates specific sound frequencies. You can learn more about Mandara Cromwell’s work here.

This is a clip that John Stuart Reid just sent me of a cymatics demonstration at the International Sound Healing Conference. Watch it and you will see the cymatics form of throat singing (overtone singing), a dove, a coyote, and a cello, as well as others.

In the video John is doing the speaking, and Erik Larson can be seen standing to his left. John and Erik are co-creators of the world’s first CymaScope, which you can also see in front of the film screen.

You may remember from previous posts that John Stuart Reid is working to create a “dolphin alphabet” using images from cymatics. He has also informed me that he has recently completed an image of the “song of the sun” which was recorded by the SOHO spacecraft, then transferred to the CymaScope to create the image. I will be featuring this image soon so keep your eye out!

I was just re-reading a wonderful piece on writing on cymatics – it’s called a “Commentary on Cymatics” by John Beaulieu, N.D. Ph.D. – and it reminded me that both our “right and left brains” become engaged when we watch cymatics, and both are hungry to be “fed” with their own kind of cymatics information.

As Dr. Beaulieu reminded me, our right brain wants to see cymatics images, create cymatics experiments and feel the vibration personally; our left brain wants to understand why cymatics works.

So today, I have some cymatics for both your right and your left brain to enjoy:

1. Cymatics For Your Right Brain:

Get your hands and eyes involved by building your own simple cymatics device using my free cymatics instructions here. 2. Cymatics For Your Left Brain:

Go read Dr. John Beaulieu’s excellent introduction to Hans Jenny’s “Cymatics” book here. It’s a great cymatics read, and will give you a good, solid introduction to the ideas, hopes and principles underlying cymatics. To get you started, here’s an excerpt:

“I first became aware of Dr. Jenny’s work in 1974 when I was working at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital in New York City as Supervisor of Music Therapy. A fellow therapist placed a copy of Cymatics, Vol. I on my desk. I remember the joy of looking at the cymatic sound patterns, and the wonderful sense of “Yes!” that rippled through my being. Each picture was worth at least a thousand words and I felt as though I were reading volumes in just a few minutes...Source

Ever wonder why we (or, at least a whole lot of us) like being around wood, glass and stone better than plastic?

Take a look at the photo above, of snowflakes magnified on the plastic lid of a garbage can. Notice the geometrically “sound” form of the snowflakes, vs. the globular, chaotic structure of the blue plastic underneath.

In the last few months I have been looking around my home and gradually weeding out all the plastics, and replacing them with wood, glass or metal objects as much as possible.

Why?

Because I would rather live in a “cymatic household” than a chaotic one (breakfast time aside).

Even aside from the environmental impact of non-biodegradable plastics on the environment, I would rather be surrounded by geometrically sound, wave-conducting objects that I “resonate” with, than chaotic globs that are no longer able to conduct vibration because they have had the geometry crushed out of them (otherwise known as plastic).

One of the things that cymatics makes us aware of is the geometry of sound and other inaudible waves, visible on a 1 to 1 scale. However, if we look at objects surrounding us under a microscope (as in Masaru Emoto’s work) we can see that most natural things at their material base are geometric in structure.

Are we on some level aware of the vibration, or wave conduction, in materials around us all the time, not only when we see cymatics demonstrated visually?

If so, I would rather be sitting at a wooden kitchen table than a plastic one. I would rather use a glass container for storage than a plastic one. I would rather be surrounded by cymatically sound objects than cymatically dead objects.

I recently created this video of my cymatic singing process for Bjork.

I am combining singing and cymatics by going out into the forest and singing the tones of objects such as a flower, a tree or a stone and recording it.

I then bring these ’songs’ back into the studio and sing them into a cymatic sounder to create the cymatic pattern of the object from the forest.

The sound in the video is of my voice ’singing a flower’ overlaid several times into one track.

In the news: Horatio Thomas Lawson, 22, recently used cymatics to create his showcase portfolio piece for his graduation from Edinburgh College of Art.

An article in the Eastlothian Courier states, “Horatio is the only wholly deaf student to graduate from the university in 2009 and his innovative portfolio – based on the theme of ‘sound works’ – will be seen by about 2,000 visitors later this month at an end-of-year showcase.”

It goes on to describe how Horatio experiences music through physical vibrations and wanted to reproduce that experience for his art exhibit visitors.

Horatio described how his cymatics work demonstrates the way he perceives sound, and that he uses vibration to “paint with colour and charcoal, and also to create sound patterns by pulsing sound waves through liquid.”

One example described in the article on his exhibition included “a box filled with polystyrene balls with four speakers mounted at each corner…The feather-light balls appear to dance to the musical rhythms emitted through the speakers due to sound vibration, similar to how Horatio himself appreciates music.”

It will be interesting to see whether Horatio continues to work with cymatics and art, although his plan after graduation at this time is to pursue a masters in film and TV.

Dr. June Weider is a self-described ‘bone toner’ I met at the Cymatics Conference in Atlanta this year.

Here she talks about her fascinating work ‘toning’ the bones of the human spine with sound, which you can read about in more detail in her book, Song of the Spine.

She talks about the frequencies of our spine, and how she has learned to bring them back into ‘tune’ with their original frequencies when they become what can be called ‘out of tune.’

I flew out to the Cymatics Conference in Atlanta this past weekend. This is the third year of the conference which was started by Mandara Cromwell.

The emphasis this year was on research, documentation and substantiation of cymatics as used in healing. The Atlanta conference is focused on healing with cymatics rather than “pure science” or cymatic art.

However there were several researchers, doctors and scientists there that had some very interesting things to say (which they could back up with clinical studies) about the work they were doing with cymatics.

 One of the speakers, John Beaulieu, Ph.D. is one of the foremost philosophers and major innovators in sound healing today.  I was fortunate to be able to talk with John about his work with cymatics and Nitric Oxide. I will be publishing a short interview with him in a later post…
