Cymatics On Steel by Jodina Meehan

The proposal I submitted to Kickstarter for the creation of a cymatics app for the iPhone and iPad has been accepted, so now it’s just a matter of getting the project completed and up at Kickstarter for funding!

So, that’s what I’ll be working on in the next few days…

Here’s where YOU come in:

I am in the process of laying out what kinds of “perks and prizes” will be available for all levels of cymatics app supporters (Kickstarter has a system of pledges and rewards, so everyone who donates to a project gets something in return).

What I need to know now is, what types of cymatics rewards would YOU be most interested in if you end up donating to the cymatics app project?

Some of the things I’ve thought would be of interest are the cymatics app itself, cymatics DVDs, a copy of the book “Cymatics” by Hans Jenny, and maybe some prints of my own cymatics work…but what do you think?

What would you find most exciting to own from the world of cymatics?

This is an excellent video made by Suzanne Tribe, a student over at the School of Cymatics.

She built a homemade tonascope using PVC (like in these diy cymatics instructions), then invited a friend to sing Mozart’s “Una Donna a Quindici Anni” through the pipe. Watch this video to see how they achieved some beautiful and complex cymatics images using a very simple setup.

This is a cymatics video test I did for my last project, I was using a wave driver, small amp and an iphone app called the Oscillator 1.1.1 to create these cymatics images.

There are a few iphone apps that you can use to create frequency tones, but this one has produced the best results for me so far using this setup. The only problem is when someone calls me in the middle of doing a cymatics video!

The School of Cymatics has officially opened it’s doors with it’s first virtual classroom lesson “Cymatics 101″ going live today. The school already has 67 members and the doors are currently still open for free admission.

“Cymatics 101, Part I” is the first in a series of new “5 minute classes” that give students an easy way to learn about cymatics one lesson at a time. Each lesson includes a cymatics science fact, a cymatics art demo, featured correspondence from the “cymatics mailbag” and a quote from cymatics history. There will be more virtual classroom lessons as the video series is recorded, and you can be first to be notified of new video lessons in the series by enrolling at the School of Cymatics.

Sound healing is closely tied to cymatics, and in fact I met several M.D. practitioners of sound healing at the Cymatics Conference in Atlanta.

Sound healing practitioners use cymatics, not necessarily in the sense that they are making sound visible (as with cymatics and art), but in that they apply sound to matter in order to shape and change it. For example a sound healing practitioner might use sound applied to the human body, and in recent years there has been an emphasis on scientifically record and report on the results achieved using cymatics for sound healing.

These sound healing practitioners range from doctors to chiropractors to yoga teachers, who state that using cymatics for sound healing often generates results that no other therapy could achieve. Some use highly researched frequencies stored and generated on a machine with specific frequencies recommended for specific diagnoses; others use their own voice and a more intuitive approach to sound healing.

If you are interested in learning more about cymatics and sound healing, here are three good places to start. I met all three of the following practitioners in person at the Cymatics Conference in 2008 and they are great resources for sound healing information:

John Beaulieu is the author of “Music and Sound in the Healing Arts” and uses tuning forks among other techniques for sound healing. Dr. Beaulieu also has a “BioSonics sound school” where you can learn about sound healing yourself. Watch my video interview with Dr. Beaulieu here.

Dr. June Leslie Wieder, Doctor of Chiropractic and author of “Sound of the Spine,” focuses on the “resonance of the spine” and applying specific vibrational frequencies directly to the vertebrae. Watch my video interview with Dr. Wieder here.

Mandara Cromwell is President of Cymatherapy® International, and Director of the Board of the International Sound Therapy Association (ISTA), and director of the International Conference on Cymatics. Her focus is the use of a machine called the Cyma®1000, which generates specific sound frequencies. You can learn more about Mandara Cromwell’s work here.

This is a clip that John Stuart Reid just sent me of a cymatics demonstration at the International Sound Healing Conference. Watch it and you will see the cymatics form of throat singing (overtone singing), a dove, a coyote, and a cello, as well as others.

In the video John is doing the speaking, and Erik Larson can be seen standing to his left. John and Erik are co-creators of the world’s first CymaScope, which you can also see in front of the film screen.

You may remember from previous posts that John Stuart Reid is working to create a “dolphin alphabet” using images from cymatics. He has also informed me that he has recently completed an image of the “song of the sun” which was recorded by the SOHO spacecraft, then transferred to the CymaScope to create the image. I will be featuring this image soon so keep your eye out!

Otherwise known as a tonascope, a Cymatic Sounder lets you create cymatic images with your voice.

I designed my own version that’s quick and easy to build and just takes a couple items from your local hardware store and florist’s (or grocery store).

Watch this fascinating and well-done video to find out about what is believed to be cymatics “music frozen in stone” in a chapel in Scotland.

There are what appears to be cymatics patterns carved into stone cubes throughout this chapel, and Stuart Mitchell has spent years studying them.

He used cymatics – a plate on an oscillator from what I can tell, similar to the apparatus Hans Jenny used – to re-create the patterns, and see what tones matched to each design.

Then he had musicians recreate the music carved in the stone and bring it back to life after centuries of silence…but it doesn’t stop there. There is a sculpture of an angel at one end of the chapel that gave some interesting clues along the way. Play it to find out what I mean.

This video is particularly interesting to watch because it alternates from pictures of the stone cubes to patterns being created with cymatics, so you can instantly compare.

Is this cymatics-generated “music frozen in stone” meant to be discovered and sung hundreds of years in the future? Or just a (very striking and strange) “coincidence?”
