Cymatics can do the “impossible” and defy gravity, according to none other than great cymatics pioneer Hans Jenny.

In his groundbreaking work, “Cymatics” Hans Jenny documents his surprising experiments with the effects of cymatics vs gravity on matter – and, according to Jenny, cymatics won.

It seems cymatics (sound waves applied to a surface) can actually cause matter to defy gravity, preventing matter from falling to the ground, as it would normally. How did he discover this?

In “Cymatics,” Jenny writes that after putting matter such as sand or liquids on a plate and causing it to oscillate and form cymatics patterns simply by applying sound to the plate when in a horizontal position, he then tipped the plate sideways, and…

The matter on the plate stayed on the plate and did not fall.

He then stopped the sound source for a moment, and the matter at once began to slide downwards, falling as matter normally should when on a vertical surface; however, when he turned the sound back on, the matter proceeded to climb back up the plate, and reform perfectly into the cymatics patterns it had been holding previously.

The matter then remained clinging to the vertical surface, oscillating to the sound waves and seeming to “defy gravity” as it hung above the earth in beautiful cymatic symmetry.

I was just re-reading a wonderful piece on writing on cymatics – it’s called a “Commentary on Cymatics” by John Beaulieu, N.D. Ph.D. – and it reminded me that both our “right and left brains” become engaged when we watch cymatics, and both are hungry to be “fed” with their own kind of cymatics information.

As Dr. Beaulieu reminded me, our right brain wants to see cymatics images, create cymatics experiments and feel the vibration personally; our left brain wants to understand why cymatics works.

So today, I have some cymatics for both your right and your left brain to enjoy:

1. Cymatics For Your Right Brain:

Get your hands and eyes involved by building your own simple cymatics device using my free cymatics instructions here. You won’t need to spend more than $20, you can build your device in under 20 minutes, and you will be able to see your voice making amazing cymatics patterns right before your eyes.

2. Cymatics For Your Left Brain:

Go read Dr. John Beaulieu’s excellent introduction to Hans Jenny’s “Cymatics” book here. It’s a great cymatics read, and will give you a good, solid introduction to the ideas, hopes and principles underlying cymatics. To get you started, here’s an excerpt:

“I first became aware of Dr. Jenny’s work in 1974 when I was working at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital in New York City as Supervisor of Music Therapy. A fellow therapist placed a copy of Cymatics, Vol. I on my desk. I remember the joy of looking at the cymatic sound patterns, and the wonderful sense of “Yes!” that rippled through my being. Each picture was worth at least a thousand words and I felt as though I were reading volumes in just a few minutes...Source

Ever wonder why we (or, at least a whole lot of us) like being around wood, glass and stone better than plastic?

Take a look at the photo above, of snowflakes magnified on the plastic lid of a garbage can. Notice the geometrically “sound” form of the snowflakes, vs. the globular, chaotic structure of the blue plastic underneath.

In the last few months I have been looking around my home and gradually weeding out all the plastics, and replacing them with wood, glass or metal objects as much as possible.

Why?

Because I would rather live in a “cymatic household” than a chaotic one (breakfast time aside).

Even aside from the environmental impact of non-biodegradable plastics on the environment, I would rather be surrounded by geometrically sound, wave-conducting objects that I “resonate” with, than chaotic globs that are no longer able to conduct vibration because they have had the geometry crushed out of them (otherwise known as plastic).

One of the things that cymatics makes us aware of is the geometry of sound and other inaudible waves, visible on a 1 to 1 scale. However, if we look at objects surrounding us under a microscope (as in Masaru Emoto’s work) we can see that most natural things at their material base are geometric in structure.

Are we on some level aware of the vibration, or wave conduction, in materials around us all the time, not only when we see cymatics demonstrated visually?

If so, I would rather be sitting at a wooden kitchen table than a plastic one. I would rather use a glass container for storage than a plastic one. I would rather be surrounded by cymatically sound objects than cymatically dead objects.

I made this video in response to the question, “Are cymatics images ever found in nature?”

The best answer to this can bc found in Alexander Lauterwasser’s book, Water Sound Images, which is currently available on Amazon.

Mr. Lauterwasser is carrying on the work begun by Hans Jenny in the 1960’s today, and this book documents his research and the beautiful images created and photographed along the way.

As you will see, Mr. Lauterwasser is very interested in the connection between patterns found in nature and cymatics images. This video gives you a peek at his fascinating book; take a look and see what you think: are cymatics images found in nature?

This past weekend I went to the Dowsers convention in Killington, Vermont.

Jeff Volk had let me know that he would be speaking there, so I went and spent the weekend and saw his talk on Sunday morning.

He is a great speaker. What I was most impressed with was his ability to take complex topics in Cymatics, physics, mathematics, and other ‘big ideas’ and put them into quickly absorbable context.

For example he was making a point about order and chaos in the universe. He described how, many people are continually trying to become more ‘peaceful’ and to have more order in their lives, but no matter how good they get at that there are always moments of chaos that come up to disrupt everything…but how that is a good thing because chaos is what injects creativity and newness into the established order of things, without that things would become stagnant. (He put it better than I am).

It related to Hans Jenny’s cymatics film footage he was showing in that cymatics show how things are always coming from and trying to return to a state of order, but that chaos is interjected at certain points, say when a burst of high amplitude is applied in an otherwise steady sequence of ordered patterns.

 It made me realize that I often think of the universe as ‘chaos that one imposes order upon’ – but that in reality, it appears to be ‘order that one interjects chaos into’ – and that is not a bad thing, given that chaos is the great clearer, leveler and seed of creativity and new growth.

 I purchased several good books from Jeff relating to cymatics, the one that I am reading now is a small, beautiful book called “Harmonograph: A Visual Guide To the Mathematics of Music” by Anthony Ashton. A harmonograph is an instrument created during victorian times to reveal the patterns found in music…I don’t have time for a full description now, but I will talk more about it later.

Today I got a surprise call from Jeff Volk.

Jeff is well known in cymatic circles and is the publisher of Hans Jenny’s “Cymatics” as well as Alexander Lauterwasser’s “Water Sound Images.”

Jeff said he will be at the dowser’s convention at Killington, VT this weekend, and will be giving a presentation on cymatics on Sunday. I will definitely be going so that I can see his presentation, and meet him in person as I have only talked with him on the phone so far.

I am really looking forward to our meeting! Jeff is an expert on Cymatics and his site is the only place I know of where you can find  DVD copies of Hans Jenny’s original films of Cymatics.
