I have had many, many requests here at the Journal and at the School of Cymatics for a cymatics iPhone app (or some way of creating cymatics digitally) but none exist to recommend. So…
I am creating the first ever cymatics iPhone app! But it’s still in the development stage, so I’m open to YOUR ideas…
What do you think should be included to make the perfect cymatics iPhone app?

1. You’ll be able to use your voice or other music to create cymatic designs
2. A resource section of relevant information about cymatics
3. A DIY section of instructions for non-digital cymatics devices

I think you should be able to change the “relative size” of the simulation so that people can experiment changing the interference patterns. As the “plate size” changes, so different standing waves will arise on the plate. Another interesting idea would be to include an oscillator.

I hope you will make it possible to take a snapshot of the resulting cymatics image, and then be able to email it, post it on fbook/twitter and save it into the Photos-section of the iPhone.
Would really appreciate getting told when the iPhone app is available / or when your Kickstarter crowdfund has started.
I know it’s possible to play music synced to the iPhone from within an application – would it be possible to use the Cymatics visualization system to watch music / show music to your friends?
It’s also possible to record sound within an app, so would it then be possible to also record both the incoming sound and resultant cymatics video and play it back, like a loop? So you record in a sound, watch what happens to the cymatics imagery, and then when you stop recording the sound, you can replay it (in the non-recording replay-mode) and watch the cymatics movement over and over again, and share it with your friends or inside the app with other users worldwide. (Ocarina, for instance, shows a globe where one can rotate around the earth and see where people have posted Ocarina melodies (you will start hearing a bit of the song someone else has made, and can zoom in to watch it being played)).
There’s probably heaps more the app could do, but wouldn’t mind beta-testing the first iteration, once it’s ready.

all great ideas – recording and sharing images would be especially important, I don’t see why it can’t be done. will definitely include you in the beta testing stage and let you know when Kickstarter is ready to go – thanks for the support!

Great idea! I don’t have an iPhone or an iPad, so I’m not even sure if this would be do-able, but an option to save a copy of the cymatic image and either send it to an email, or download directly to a laptop / PC would be great. And, once again, not sure if this would be something an app or iPhone/Pad would be capable of, but it would be very cool to know what frequency was creating that particular cymatic image.

Excellent idea Jodina! I’m so happy you are creating a fulfilling life and having such a positive effect on the world!
Imho, Cymatics can be confusing to many people-the first thought in my head about your project would be to succinctly describe the difference between Cymatics and the “motion sound graphic thing” that has been available w/songs while listening on computer-the moving, surreal, colorful picture programs that “react” to music. These are obviously not cymatics. I can’t wait to hear more! I’ll send you more ideas as well…

really good point Russell – there ARE other image/music programs out there that are not working in a cymatic way – so creating it to be true to cymatics and then explaining the difference like you say will be really important – thanks for pointing that out. I’ll make sure to include a good explanation in my Kickstarter video.

sounds awesome….. the ability to create art via sound is beyond cool. I design album covers and music packaging and cymatics are just a much more organic version of this.
Make sure you can save the images you create, possibly integrate with Facebook or other social media to share them.

I agree with Mick. It would also be great to have the option to add a color filter to the screen that would allow one to view the color that corresponds to the frequency that is creating the cymatic image.
Also, will there be the ability to generate two or more tones simultaneously? This could provide some interesting studies in harmony/discord, and how it applies in the natural world.

Thanks Justin, I will look into how to generate several tones at once as we are working on this…I am interested in your idea about adding colors that correspond to the frequency, how do you imagine determining the color that would correspond? Is there a system or way to do that you are working with or know about already? let me know…
not sure on the price of the app yet, but will be sure to keep it affordable for everyone

colors have frequencies too, can you sync frequencies of colors and tones? Is there an established color/tone system you can use? Or can you assign colors to tones?

I’m sorry for the late reply. I’ve been moving. There is a book called “The Correlation of Sound and Color” by Paul Foster Case (1931, in the public domain) that provides a lot of great information on the subject.
As I understand it (maybe someone with more background in mathematics can provide more information), the frequency of a sound wave can be converted into Amgstroms and moved further up the spectrum of vibration. Since everything is vibration (sound, color, electricity, infrared, X-ray, etc), it can all be expressed on the same scale.
I hope that doesn’t sound too abstruse. I might be able to elaborate after I’ve had some sleep.

Hi Jodina and community,
I wanted to offer our iphone app Music of The Spheres for review.
Released in August 2011, it has received some great reviews.
The gongs of the solar system were transposed through water and included as a cymatics visualizer within this iPhone app. It is true cymatics and we also took our work a step further. We imposed a self similar kaleidoscopic boundry condition within the cymatic transposition. This mirror array was set at a golden mean angles and proved to be quite an authentic display of light polarization and sympathetic vibratory phenomena.

I think the main difference between your app and what I will be working on is that the app I am developing allows the users to create the shapes themselves with lots of environmental/plugin interactivity, while your app is great for meditation and viewing the cymatics along with the music.
I think these cymatics apps will help spread the word about this phenomenon really well all around the world. Thanks again for sharing with us all at the Journal…

Itwould be great to be able to output the video to a projector or large tv.

Eric – these are both good ideas. I was thinking of using some different materials and letting people change the options…will look into. I wonder if the iphone/ipad already has the ability to integrate with a projector…I bet it does. If so, that will be easy

It would be good if you could plug in an instrument and pass it through the app. I know that you can do this using an ipad add-on that comes with a instrument cable input/headphone jack to the ipad. Best of wishes, Jodina!

The app:
-Stepless colorchange
-choiche for different materials:starch, sand , water, ferrofluid etc.
-reaction to movement
-sampling og video sequences
- resize an new module …look at this App to learn about code:” Forge og neon”
-the voice or musivc mode needs to shift frequencies towards the nearest cymatic active freq. this function should be scalable so its fun for talents and novicecs.
-Do it fo ipad too it will sell- hurry up !

I think it’d be interesting to be able to change the color of the material undergoing the vibration, and also raising and lowering the frequency by sliding your fingers up and down.

As a follow-up thought to what Juan said, and again I apologize for not being familiar with iPad / iPhone technology… I just got my first ever laptop a little over a year ago, and my first ever mp3 player for $30 this summer, lol. But Juan mentioned the ability to transfer things via a headphone jack type data cable… if the tech is supported, this would be great. I would be very interested in viewing specific frequencies as a cymatic image (such as solar frequencies, Earth frequencies, the frequencies of other stars, etc.). Things like that which are outside the range of the human voice, and most (all?) current instruments, but could be supplied by an mp3 player or PC interface.
I may just have to buy an iPad for the initial sole purpose of using this app!
As a side note, I would be fascinated to know how you are able to create a program which can digitally create cymatics. Like, how the program knows what to do.

It sounds as a very exciting idea to have such an app. But i wonder how it works; can you share technical details? For me the most interesting use will be to do experiments on very subtile topics, like for example the relation between words and the tone with which they are spoken. In order to do this the app should be way more sensible than any existing machine. And it should not work on the basis of simulations.
Be sure i don’t mean this as critiscism; i could never ever make such an app myself, but it would be extremely interesting if your app can help to uncover some mysteries! I hope you succeed!

I am so excited to discover you are working on an app for cymatics! I can’t wait to get it. I channel what is called The Language of Light, a language our soul understands but cannot be translated. It often embodies solfeggio frequencies. I’ve been looking for a visual way to show people the sounds as a true expression of light and frequency patterns, rather than random fractals or sacred geometry. I think your app may be just the ticket! I don;t have an ipad but would love to be able to use it on a full MAC to record the cymatic patterns synchronistically while recording music, singing, toning, etc, (like in garage band or imovie) so the patterns are always paired with the proper sound rather than laying it in as an image file later? So many potentials for so many creative purposes. So cool, thanks for all your efforts in developing this app!
