My First Cymatic Plate “Made To Order”

by Jodina Meehan on September 29, 2010

Today I will be shipping out the first cymatics plate I have ever made for someone other than myself. I have a feeling it may not be the last plate I will ever make for someone else; once it was finished, I was really happy with how it turned out, and I have a feeling that others may be interested in having a cymatics plate made for them as well.

I just need to figure out how I can make them in a way that’s a little less time consuming. I will work on it, but in the meantime, if you are interested in owning your own cymatic plate but don’t have the means to make one, why don’t you let me know in the comments section below…

This will help me merely in gaging how many people would currently be interested in owning a cymatics plate who can’t make one (for whatever reason). The plate that I created includes the “handheld” plate you see in the photo, as well as a violin bow, some rosin, an allen wrench, some salt, and a set of directions for how to play it. In other words, everything you need to get started playing a cymatics plate straight out of the box.

In the meantime, if you would like to learn to make your own cymatics plate with step-by-step instructions, you can get a video course on it here.

Thanks for your feedback on this! (don’t forget to leave a comment below)…

I’m interested in buying your device as I really don’t have time to make it. Could you tell me the price and shipping expenses to Spain?

I’d consider buying a cymatic plate at some stage in the future. Ideally I would like to build my own, but if that proves too difficult I would probably investigate a bought one.

It would be even better if the plate could be connected to a speaker or sound generator, rather than using a violin bow. The reason for this is, I would like to have control over the frequencies being sent, so I can achieve specific patterns on the plate.

Yeah I would like to buy one if it isn’t costly. That goes for shipping too. I think you would do well to put these on ebay on the buy it now menu for a steady price. you could even buy and resell the pieces we need to build them just to make it convenient. of course you will need to profit. if you find a cheap enough source to get the materials from in bulk then making / reselling would be most profitable.

Would you be interested in me developing a circuit/Amplifier so that you could attach one or more transducers to your plates and the be able to measure and or apply very specific frequencies for your research? perhaps we could work together on this? Let me know your thoughts. Rich

Oh, yeah! Let me know the price and what would also be helpful would be techniques for taking pics. I recall that Hans Jenny used a strobe light to get his pics. I am interested in making a catalog of cymatic figures with frequencies from the Western semitones.
If anyone knows of someone else doing this work please let me know!
Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

The School of Cymatics would be a good place to learn the info you need for taking photos etc. – go there, become a member and then ask your question in the forum…

Jodina,
My teens have all offered to learn to make a cymatics plate that can be checked out like a library book from our PTO or school STEM projects for promoting science in schools at SAU16. They already volunteer time to teach. So, learning and sharing a lesson in cymatics would be a skill they would use to shift many young people’s paradigms.
Would you offer a workshop over the summer to us? We will do the work and buy the materials. Perhaps a demonstration in person would be helpful and we will teach others this skill and share the resouces with your coaching! Ami in NH

Hi! Jodi, Yes, I would be interested in buying one. I did sign up for the instructions to make one BUT I’m not sure yet what it entails and if I can actually do it. When you know the cost of ‘your completed one’ let me know. This is exciting!

I’d like one. By the way, I tried making a digeridoo cymatics like you had posted but couldn’t get it to work….the balloon over the end cut off too much air…

Hi, What is the price for a cymatics plate (I am in the US) and also, I agree with Theo, “It would be even better if the plate could be connected to a speaker or sound generator, rather than using a violin bow. The reason for this is, I would like to have control over the frequencies being sent, so I can achieve specific patterns on the plate.”
thanks, KT

Thank you all for your comments and interest in a cymatic plate!

I will be looking into how to get a cymatic plate available for you to buy in the very near future…so stay tuned! In the meantime if you are not a member of the School of Cymatics, be sure to do that today.

In response to questions about an electric version of the cymatic plate: I am happy to see the level of interest in that. It is (at this time) somewhat more expensive to set up such a device, but I will look into how one could do so as inexpensively as possible and get back to you on it…

I would definitely be interested, and echo Theo’s desire to have the same plate able to be played directly with the violin bow, or hooked up to a sound generator of some sort, to allow experimentation with specific frequencies. Any chance one could be made that has a shallow lip, so that liquid could be used in place of salt?

I also plan to build my own from your instructions, but it would be great to have one that was ready to go, so that I could develop skill playing it while building my own… that way, when my home-built plate was ready to go, i would be as well =)

Please keep us informed! =D

Ooh! I’m interested! You would happen to know how to make ones into different shapes, would you? I saw a video of a cymatic plate in the shape of a dragon fly. I’d like to run experiments with the plate’s shape as the primary variable, allowing these sorts of structural associations to present themselves.

Skip to 3:13 – or watch the whole thing; it’s an awesome video!
