Cymatics: Preparing a Cymatics Plate Surface

by Jodina Meehan on December 5, 2009

Here are 3 tips for preparing a cymatics plate surface for creating cymatics patterns using sound waves.

1. Your plate should not be too thin; 1/8″ is the thickness of the plate shown in the photo.

2. Paint or spray the surface of the cymatics plate with black glossy enamel.

3. Before you sprinkle particles on the surface of your cyamtics plate to play it, you can use a small amount of alum or aluminum sulfate and a cloth to polish your plate lightly. (Don’t press too hard or you will create scratches.) This will remove any remaining resistance on the surface of the paint.
